The terror stricken middle-aged man stumbled headlong down the roughly hewn chalk tunnel, the way ahead was lit only by his pocket torch. The uneven path was treacherous, with just a narrow dip worn in the middle of the floor. A misplaced footing would inevitably lead to a fall, probably serious injury, and certain capture. For over two centuries strong men, bent double under their heavy load, had shuffled and picked their way along this same path. History professor James Walker was running in fear of his life… *** The tunnel sloped steeply down towards the sea, ending in a sheer cliff face. At one time, this had been a cave at sea level, but 200 years of erosion by the restless sea had washed the lower part away, leaving a large bed of limestone rocks on the shore some 6 metres below the tunnel entrance. James already knew this; his rope to the cliff top hung there, waiting for him. The two criminals in hot pursuit, Bert Cox and Harry Ball, shouted for him to stop, but why would he? They intended to kill him. Their warnings and threats echoed menacingly in the darkness. The sound of their running and stumbling feet added...

As Baxter started to come round, he felt the sting of a needle in his neck muscle. Instantly, a rapidly flooding stream of burning agony began radiating out from the injection site. Ronnie tried to move, but he was paralysed. Speech was now impossible, and not even a scream could pass his lips to relieve the ever increasing torture. His mind was crystal clear though; whatever the poison was, it had been chosen to inflict unimaginable pain and yet allow full awareness. “I think you will be intrigued with this little cocktail of household chemicals. The Americans quite like it for their prisoners who would rather die than talk. To be fair, they tend to be less heavy handed than me, because they have no desire to kill their victim. “The particularly interesting detail about this compound is the size of the molecules; they don’t penetrate the blood brain barrier, so there’s absolutely no chance that you will become drowsy or unconscious. If you like pain, and I am sure you do, because you love inflicting it, you will have the best time of your life. And the wonderful thing is, you won’t miss a moment of it.”...

The story starts mid-1943 when Karl Strom, electronics engineer turned spy, is asked by Hitler to invent a weapon that would win the war for Germany in conjunction with the development of the V-1. MI6 believe their assassination attempt on Strom succeeded, but he turns up in Alderney with a mysterious crate. A British spy called Raven reports back to MI5 about the activities of Strom and his 2 men and woman team he is training. Raven is seen, but remains at large, so Strom believes he and his team are now on a suicide mission. Whilst on Alderney, Strom falls in love with Helga, the Oberst’s girlfriend. They only wanted fun, but the day Strom leaves for England, the relationship takes a dramatic turn. The trip to England in an S-boat with the fragile secret devices turns out to be dangerous, but that is nothing compared with the terrifying journey to shore. Rough water has probably destroyed the devices, but there is no way of knowing for sure until deployed. Are the team risking their lives for nothing? Unknown to them, their trusted agent in England, known as Sundown, is blown to pieces when MI5 pounce. How will the team mana...

Peenemünde Rabbit. Mid-day, June 2nd 1943 Karl Strom ambled away from the Peenemünde Army Research Centre, lost in deep thought. As he headed towards his regular lunchtime spot, a tranquil lake at Cammerer See, his stomach rumbled impatiently. He quickened his pace, eager to devour the sandwiches and lager he carried in the canvas bag slung over his shoulder. He did his best problem solving down at the lake shore; just as well, the brilliant team of scientists and technicians working under his direction had just thrown him another challenge. Karl and his team worked long and stressful hours in a large windowless room that served both as a laboratory and a small scale workshop. The air was heavily polluted by the fumes from portable furnaces used for melting glass and metal, mingled with the pervasive smell of machine oil of the instrument lathes and drills. Outside, it was another fine summer day. Karl knew that with the warm sun on his back and the gentle cool breeze blowing off the lake, he would be re-energised. The scent of wild flowers and the sound of birds chirping in the distance would calm him. Weeks ago, Adolph Hitler ...

October 10th 2012: Desperate action After leaving the hospital, Max kept his head down and slouched along like any other hoody in the crowd. Three hours after he left the warmth and comfort of the ward, he was chilled to the bone, soaked to the skin and racked with pain in every joint and muscle of his battered body. The only thing keeping him going was the dread of being caught and imprisoned. For all he knew, he might be a murderer and terrorist, and deserved to be excluded from society, but that did not make prison any more acceptable. He headed towards Victoria Embankment, known for its soup kitchens, a focal point for the hordes of homeless people in the area. Knowing the hostels and soup kitchens would be under surveillance, he knew there was no point seeking food and shelter there. Keeping out of sight in the back streets and alleys, Max came across a community of homeless down-and-outs, and felt sorry for them. Then he realized that they were all much better off than he was; they had shelter of sorts, warmer clothes and were not on the run. Well, all but one, that is. The old woman lying before him was dead, curled...

Rubin made his detailed notes, relating them to sketch drawings of the tomb layout. The enormity of the discovery and countless questions flooding his mind made him tired and dizzy; his handwriting started off neat and legible, but was quickly becoming more distorted and peppered with crossings out. He now set up the torches to light the first wall and he fumbled with the tripod and camera, as he focused the first shot. The euphoria that had been gripping him was subsiding and he realized that he was drenched in sweat, breathing hard and his upper body ached. The cramp in his left arm, through holding the clipboard, had spread to his chest and back. The room seemed to darken noticeably; “the torch batteries are failing,” he thought, and stood upright to ease his pain with a stretch. As he stood over the camera and pressed the shutter button, he shut his eyes so he would not be blinded by the flash. His torch moved on the smooth floor, at that moment, and rolled around in an arc, lighting the back wall. The shadow of both the sarcophagus and Rubin, were projected on the wall in front of the camera, from the backlighting. The cl...

"You? A woman?!" Dirty Simo laughed. "You want to fight the great Azzodonian army?" He mocked the lady standing in front of him, who was dressed in a long, hooded cape. His belly, grotesquely obese, pushed forward as he almost choked on laughter before asking the next question. "Are you mad?" A teardrop formed in the corner of his eye, and saliva dribbled down his chin as he spoke. Dirty Simo's attire consisted of an old, torn doublet that was indicative of his lowly status. "With a face like yours, woman, you don't need an army to conquer a kingdom! Present yourself at any banquet! Watch how kings and their entire subjects shall yield to your beauty!" His beard was stroked a few times as his eyes leered at the beautiful woman. “A great reward shall befall upon all you men, if you help me fight,” she said, dressed in a long hooded white cape, “I am Aaricia, the…” ...

This is the story of a most remarkable entity: thermonuclear radiation. The process is the mass of the atom’s nucleus turned into radiative energy. Oddly, atom’s mysterious properties are alluded to in scripture; and for its powers primeval beings via for the prize while exploiting its work. Its' genesis is fundamental as it presently overshadows our existence for good...or evil! Antiquity reveals it is germane to life; also is instrumental in its' formation as well as the primary function in the Cosmos of stellar entities...so here is the paramountcy of this Mardi-gras of errors:...

CREATOR made thermonuclear light; without Himself and this light, was not any thing made that was made. This light or radiation is what the stars are formed by. In Genesis this process is mysteriously encrypted thru the term ‘star’ and ‘light.’ Creator then made a beautiful angel to take care of this powerful force; Genesis was to introduce the force and the troubled angel (and Savior from this dilemma) that is referred to in several other books of the Bible as well....

I wrote this little book for a very special girl I know who is sometimes afraid. I’m not going to mention her by name, but she knows who she is. I know she doesn’t like to be afraid, but sometimes all of us are afraid, even though none of us want to be afraid. Things happen in our lives and before we know it we’re afraid. It doesn’t feel good to be afraid. None of us like feeling afraid. This little book is for her to use with her mom and dad. I hope there are some things in this book that help her understand why we become afraid and what we can do when we’re afraid. I hope this book helps her to not be so afraid and when she is afraid to understand what she can do to help herself and maybe by doing so to be able to help others. ...

Description Details
Fahrenheit 451 is a dystopian novel by American writer Ray Bradbury, published in 1953. It is regarded as one of his best works.[3] The novel presents a future American society where books are outlawed and "firemen" burn any that are found.[4] The book's tagline explains the title: "Fahrenheit 451 – the temperature at which book paper catches fire, and burns ..." The novel has been the subject of interpretations focusing on the historical role of book burning in suppressing dissenting ideas. In a 1956 radio interview,[5] Bradbury stated that he wrote Fahrenheit 451 because of his concerns at the time (during the McCarthy era) about the threat of book burning in the United States. In later years, he described the book as a commentary on how mass media reduces interest in reading literature.[6] In 1954, Fahrenheit 451 won the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature and the Commonwealth Club of California Gold Medal.[7][8][9] It has since won the Prometheus "Hall of Fame" Award in 1984[10] and a 1954 "Retro" Hugo Award, one of only four Best Novel Retro Hugos ever given, in 2004.[11] Bradbury was honored with a S...

Description Details
The novel opens in London in AF 632 (AD 2540 in the Gregorian calendar). The society is illuminated by the activities of the novel's central characters, Lenina Crowne and Bernard Marx, and others. Lenina, a hatchery worker, is socially accepted and contented, but Bernard, a psychologist in the Directorate of Hatcheries and Conditioning, is not. He is shorter in stature than the average of his Alpha caste—a quality shared by the lower castes, which gives him an inferiority complex. His intelligence and his work with hypnopaedia allow him to understand, and disapprove of, the methods by which society is sustained. Courting disaster, he is vocal and arrogant about his differences. Bernard is mocked by other Alphas because of his stature, as well as for his individualistic tendencies, and is threatened with exile to Iceland because of his nonconformity. His only friend is Helmholtz Watson, a lecturer at the College of Emotional Engineering. The friendship is based on their feelings of being misfits (in the context of the World State), but unlike Bernard, Watson's sense of alienation stems from being exceptionally gifted, intelligent, ha...

One of the most highly debated matter in education today is that if every individual is unique and have their own personal interests and abilities, then why do we force them down with the same syllabus and measure them on a certain criteria of writing what they memorized on a piece of paper? While this question has no easy solutions and consequently the existing system of evaluating students will probably remain the same in near future, there is however a narrow path that bypasses this system and lets students pursue and shine in the fields they truly like. The views on extracurricular is also equally conflicting- some see it as way a way of recreation, others are quick to reject and see it as nothing more than mere wastage of time. So taking both sides on account, let’s take a look at how important are extracurricular for students, if at all: ...

1. Recreation The first and the most popular benefit that people know of extracurricular is that they are good for recreation. While this notion is correct to some extent, there is a lot left to be added. The world extracurricular envelops a vast number of activities (not related to the curriculum of students) including but not limited to painting, dancing, sports, music, pottery, among others. While the notion of recreation may apply to some of this activities like sports, there are other activities that are in themselves more time consuming and intricate than the curriculum itself and done solely out of interest and not recreation. Also, there are students who are truly interested in studies and forcing them to recreate is as good as wasting their time and energy. 2. Aptitude Often overlooked by many, this is a major importance of extracurricular that helps shape and affirm one’s aptitude. We can tell a lot about any student if we know the extracurricular they take part in. Since these activities are done out of interest than compulsion, things they learn and achieve sticks with them for longer times and eventually shapes ...
