WCBD-DT2 is the CW-affiliated digital subchannel of NBC affiliate WCBD-TV that is owned by media General. The CW affiliation is provided by The CW Plus. Over-the-air, WCBD-DT2 broadcasts in 720p high definition on 2.2. Known on-air as Lowcountry CW 14, the branding refers to its channel position on Comcast. It can also be seen on Knology channel 12. By market size, it is the largest CW Plus subchannel only affiliate.

History

WCBD-DT2's origins began on January 24, 2006, when The WB and UPN announced the two networks would end broadcasting and merge. The new combined service would be called The CW. The letters would represent the first initial of corporate parents "C"BS (the parent company of UPN) and the "W"arner Bros. unit of Time Warner. WCBD launched this second digital subchannel to be Charleston's affiliate of the network. When WCBD-DT2 began broadcasting on September 18, 2006, it immediately gained its CW affiliation through the CW Plus station group. Prior to the consolidation, The WB could only be seen in the market through cable television while WMMP offered UPN. That station joined another new programming service, known as MyNetworkTV, after its owner the Sinclair Broadcast Group announced that most of its WB and UPN affiliates (including WMMP) would affiliate with that network. It operates as a sister programming service of Fox as both are owned by News Corporation.

In late-2013, WCBD-DT2 began broadcasting in 720p HD.

Newscasts

WCBD-TV produces a half hour newscast called News 2 Today which airs at 7 am, preempting 30 minutes of The Daily Buzz, which the CW plus feed carries. It also repeats the main channel's weeknight news at 6 later in the night at 10 pm, identified as WCBD 6PM News on The CW. In addition to WCBD's main studios, it also operates a bureau located on Assembly Street/SC 48 covering the Capitol in Columbia. The operating expenses are shared among Media General's outlets in South Carolina.
