The 2009 IIHF Division I World Championship was an ice hockey tournament under the authority of the International Ice Hockey Federation. It was contested from April 11–17, 2009. The tournament was played amongst two separate groups. Group A's tournament was held in Vilnius, Lithuania. The Group B games was hosted by Toruń, Poland.[1]

Group A was contested in Vilnius.

 Slovenia Relegated from Elite Pool in 2008.
 Kazakhstan Placed second in Group A at the 2008 Division I tournament.
 Japan Placed third in Group B at the 2008 Division I tournament.
 Lithuania Host, Placed fourth in Group B at the 2008 Division I tournament.
 Croatia Placed in fifth Group B at the 2008 Division I tournament.
 Australia Placed first in Division II tournament pool, Promoted to Division I.

Group B was contested in Toruń.
