Devgarh is a city and a municipality in Rajsamand district in the state of Rajasthan, India. It was estate of Chundawat rajputs.

Geography

Devgarh is located at .[1] It has an average elevation of 638 metres (2093 feet). It is situated in eastern side of Aravali Ranges on top of a small hill and a pond at its base. Surrounded by rocks on eastern side, Kali Ghati (Aravali Range) on west, Nathdwara Ghats on south and Ajmer on north. It has spectacular animal and bird sanctuaries. There are many stone and granite mines and polish factories near it.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Devgarh had a population of 16,500. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Devgarh has an average literacy rate of 65%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 76% and, female literacy is 54%. In Devgarh, 16% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Transport

The town is located 4 KM inside the NH-8(Mumbai-Delhi Highway),the landmark is Kamlighat. As no broad gauge train is available road is the best and fastest mode of transportation to reach here. Near by cities are Udaipur(140KM), Ajmer and Bhilwara. Udaipur also has Airport with regular flights from Delhi and Mumbai.

Train can be taken any where between Mavli Jn. to MArwar Jn. the route in between Marwar Jn. and Devgarh is a scenic beauty.

Places of interest

Devgarh is a popular tourist destination. It boasts of a complex of luxurious heritage resorts managed by the erstwhile royal family of the Deogarh thikana.

Apart from palace there is also Meter gauge train from Devgarh to Marwar Jn. Which goes through sanctuary and beautiful hills of Kali Ghati, you can see lots of British era bridges and tunnels through mountains, you can see lots of wild animals and a clear top view of plains of Marwar region from atop mountain. You will also get a chance to meet locals and feel the local culture of the Mewad region.

In the heart of the town there is "Kunjbihari Mandir(Temple)" (Lord Krishna Temple), it is famous for many bats who live inside the temple on the ceiling of building. There is one clock tower in main central chowk (cross) of town on top of Charbhuja Temple.

You can also visit Anjaneshwar Mahadev temples near by (around 4–5 km), the temple is very famous for its Sivalinga which naturally formed due to rain water dissolving calcium of rocks and forming it just like Ice sivalinga of Amarnath. The temple is in cave of a rock mountain, and a small water body on top of it. It is a restful picnic spot for family and individual. Due to the elevation of the rock one can see the town of Devgarh from there. Situated on Devgarh–Bhilwara route it is easily accessible throughout the year.

Other places like Nathdwara, famous for Srinathji Temple, is just 45 km from here on the road to Udaipur. Holy place of Ajmer is also just 150 km on Jaipur–Delhi Route.

Main Occupation

Mainly Devgarh is a tourist spot. Locals are also engaged in farming and stone polishing business apart from local handicrafts. Now a days few real estate agencies are trying to develop the surrounding and expanding town.

There is also a Govt. Hospital and ITI(Industrial training Institute) where many people from neighboring villages come.

  1. Rawat Shri SANGA SINGHJI, 1st Rawat of Deogarh 1521–1574, married and had issue.
  2. Rawat Shri DUDA SINGHJI, 2nd Rawat of Deogarh 1574–1611, married and had issue. He died 1611.
  3. Rawat Shri ISAR DASJI, 3rd Rawat of Deogarh 1611–1641, married and had issue. He died 1641.
  4. Rawat Shri GOKUL DASJI I, 4th Rawat of Deogarh 1641–1669, married and had issue.
  5. Rawat Shri Dwarka Dasji (qv)
  6. Kunwar Sabal Singh, he was granted the jagir of Bassi and succeeded there as Rao Sabal Singh of Bassi.
  7. Kunwar Daulat Singh, he was granted the jagir of Daulatgadh.
  8. Baisa Udai Kanwar, married Kunwar Padam Singh of Samuja, and had issue, six sons.

  10. Rawat Shri SANGRAM SINGHJI I, 6th Rawat of Deogarh 1706–1737, married and had issue.
  11. Rawat Shri Jaswant Singhji (qv)
  12. Kunwar Jai Singh, he was granted the jagir of Sangramgarh and succeeded there as Rawat Shri Jai Singhji of Sangramgarh.
  13. Rawat Shri JASWANT SINGHJI, 7th Rawat of Deogarh 1737–1776, married and had issue.
  14. Rawat Shri Raghav Dasji (qv)
  15. Kunwar Gopal Das, married and had issue.
  16. Kunwar Gyan Singh, he was granted the jagir of Gyangarh and succeeded there as Rawat Shri Gyan Singhji, 1st Rawat Sahib of Gyangarh [cr. ca1800]
  17. Kunwar Ajit Singh, he was granted the jagir of Kareda.
  18. Maharani Kundan Kunwar, married Maharaja Sawai Madho Singhji II of Jaipur.
  19. Rawat Shri RAGHAV DASJI, 8th Rawat of Deogarh 1776–1786, married and had issue.
  20. Kunwar Anop Singh, married and had issue. He died vp aged 22.

  22. Rawat Shri GOKUL DAS II, 9th Rawat of Deogarh 1786–1821, married and had issue. He died 1821.
  23. Rawat Shri Nahar Singhji I (qv)
  24. Maharani Shringar Kunwar, married Maharao Kishore Singhji II of Kotah.
  25. Rawat Shri NAHAR SINGHJI I, 10th Rawat of Deogarh 1821–1847
  26. Rawat Shri RANJIT SINGHJI, 11th Rawat of Deogarh 1847–1867, married and had issue.
  27. Rawat Shri Krishna Singhji (qv)
  28. Rawat Shri KRISHNA SINGHJI, 12th Rawat of Deogarh 1867–1900, born 1847, married 1stly, 1887, Rani Monghi Kunwarba Sahiba of Dhrangadhra, married 2ndly, Rani Mertaniji of Ghanerao, and had issue, as well as adoptive issue. He died sp 1900.
  29. Kunwar Jaswant Singh, married Kunwarani Ajab Kunwar of Badnore, died January 1886. He died vpsp January 1886.
  30. Kunwar Pratap Singh [Anop Singh], adopted from Sangramgarh, married and had issue. He died before his adoptive father before 1900.
  31. Rawat Shri Vijai Singhji (qv)
  32. Rawat Shri VIJAI SINGHJI, 13th Rawat of Deogarh 1900–1943, born 1891, educated at Mayo College, Ajmer; married Rani Nand Kunwar, daughter of Raj Rana Zalim Singhji of Delwara, and had issue. He died 1943.
  33. Rawat Shri Sangram Singhji II (qv)
  34. Rani Laxmi Kumari Chundawat, born 24 June 1916, Member of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly 1962–1971, Member on the Panel of Chairmen, Rajasthan Legislative Assembly; Member of the Rajya Sabha 1972–1978, President of the Rajasthan P.C.C., author of a number of books in Hindi and Rajasthani, married 1934, Rawat Shri Tej Singhji of Rawatsar, and has issue.   35. Baisa Khuman Kunwar, married into Bagri.
  36. Rawat Shri SANGRAM SINGHJI II, 14th Rawat of Deogarh 1943/1965, married Rani Krishna Kumari of Dumraon, and had issue. He died 1965.

  38. Rani Sita Kumari, born 1936 in Deogarh, Udaipur, educated at Sophia Girls College, Ajmer; married 25 June 1955, Raja Bahadur Vishwanath Pratap Singh of Manda, and has issue, two sons.
  39. Thakur Mandhata Singh, educated at Mayo College, Ajmer; married Thakurani Govind Kumari, daughter of Thakur Sahib Sawant Singhji of Baneria, and has issue, two children.
