Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation or KSRTC is a state-owned road transportation company in the southern state of Karnataka in India. KSRTC along with NWKRTC, NEKRTC & BMTC has the largest fleet of buses in India and also has the largest fleet of Volvo buses among state owned transport companies.

About

KSRTC was set up in 1961 under the provisions of Road Transport Corporation Act, 1950. It is wholly owned by the Government of Karnataka. The Government of India is also a shareholder in this corporation. KSRTC is also known for its introduction of Volvo B7RLE low body city buses. These buses are air conditioned, with improved tyre suspensions, a far cry from the other old members of fleet.

Till August 1997, KSRTC had a fleet of 10,400 buses, operating about 9500 schedules. In August 1997, KSRTC was divided and a new corporation by the name Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC). In November 1997, another new road transport corporation called North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) was formed to cater to the transportation needs of North Western parts of Karnataka. Recently, the North Eastern Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NEKRTC) was also formed with its corporate office in Gulbarga. The company runs a fleet of buses of all types like ordinary,semi-luxury, deluxe, and air-conditioned Volvo "Airavat" buses. The KSRTC operates services within Karnataka as well as far flung destinations such as Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Trivandrum, Kochi, Hyderabad and Goa among others. The KSRTC runs different type of buses to suit every section of the society. Their main mission is “Meeting Challenges with Innovation”.

As of 2010, KSRTC was the largest state-owned Volvo fleet operator in India.[2]

Services

KSRTC services almost all villages in Karnataka. At present, 92% villages are served by KSRTC (6743 out of 7298 Villages) and 44% in other areas (6743 out of 7298).[3] KSRTC operates 6463 schedules in a day covering an effective distance of 23.74 lakh km with a total fleet of 7599 buses. It transports, on an average, 24.57 lakh passengers per day. It also operates to the neighboring states as per the agreement reached with the respective state bus corporations of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Goa and Kerala

Types of Services

Flybus: Flybus is a nonstop luxury bus service between Bangalore International Airport and Mysore. Seats can be reserved in advance. It is a volvo multi axle bus with pantry and chemical toilets. Special features include live display of flight timings, GPS, wifi facilities and in-bus live entertainment. The first service was launched on 15 August 2013. [4] Flybus services have been planned to connect other cities, particularly Mangalore, Tirupati and Coimbatore to Bangalore Airport in the future. [5]

Airavat Bliss: Airavat Bliss is a luxury bus service with a chemical toilet, wifi facility, pantry and individual TV screens. The pantry has a coffee maker, and oven to heat food. [6]

Airavat Superia: Airavat Superia is a luxury bus service with similar features to that of Bliss, except the lack of on board pantry. It has other facilities like chemical toilet, wifi facility, pantry and individual TV screens.

Airavat Club Class: It is a luxury bus service on Volvo multi-axle bus, which provides greater comfort. It also has semi-sleeper seats with calf support. "Sleep like a baby" is the tagline for this service, highlighting the level of comfort.Blankets and Water bottles are provided.

Airavat: It is a fully air conditioned luxury bus service operated using Volvo and Mercedes Benz buses.Blankets and Water Bottles are provided.

Rajahamsa Ultra Deluxe: These are non AC deluxe bus services with recliner seats in 2*2 configuration. The bus bodies are built on Tata and Ashok Leyland bus chasis by KSRTC workshops and also private Bus Body Building units.

AC Sleeper These are AC Sleeper bus service with recliner seats 2*2 configuration.It is fully air conditioned luxury buses operated using Corona,Volvo,Mercedes Benz and Isuzu.Blankets and Water bottles are provided.

Non A\C Sleeper These are Non/Ac sleeper bus service slightly cheaper than the AC Sleeper.It provides great comfort.Usually Corona are used to operate these Buses.

Vaibhava These are Non AC Seater Buses in White livery with 'Karnataka Vaibhava' with a picture of chariot on it.They are almost the same as 'Rajahamsa Ultra Deluxe'buses. They provide recliner seats in 2*2 configuration.The Bus bodies are built on Tata and Ashok Leyland bus chassis.

Suvarna Sarige They are the cheapest type of Bus service in KSRTC. They are the most common Buses in KSRTC fleet.They are usually found in Red-White or Light Green-White livery.
