Nagpur Railway Station is a railway station in Nagpur, Maharashtra, India.

Nagpur is the geographical centre of India and one of India's most important railway junctions. The Nagpur railways constitute a very significant part of the transport and communication system in Nagpur.

A total of 242[2] trains from various destinations halt at Nagpur, making it one of the busiest junctions all over the country. These include passenger, express, mail, Duronto, Rajdhani, Garib Rath trains. Of these, 53 run daily and 26 terminate or originate from Nagpur. Almost 1.6 lakh passengers board or leave Nagpur Railway Station daily. Some important trains that are available at the Nagpur railway station are the CST Mumbai - Nagpur Duronto, Vishakapatnam Nizamuddin Samata Express, Vidarbha Express, Bangalore Nizamudin Rajdhani Express, Mumbai Howrah Mail, Trivandrum Central - New Delhi Kerala Express, Chennai Central - New Delhi Tamil Nadu Express.

The railways at Nagpur were established a long time back, well before the independence of India, as Nagpur used to be an important city of India even then. 1867 marks the beginning of the Nagpur railways. In 1881, Nagpur was linked up with another important city of India, Kolkata, via the railways of the state of Chhattisgarh.

The original railway station of Nagpur was previously located towards the east of its current site. The present-day railway station of Nagpur was also put up in the pre-independence days. being established in 1924.

The railways in Nagpur are important not only because the city is one of the tourist destinations of the country and the second capital of the significant state of Maharashtra, but also because of its prime location. The railway station has a central location in the entire country and hence is strategically very important not only in the state but in the entire subcontinent of India.[3]

Modernization

Among the 22 stations in India which have been recommended to be upgraded to international standard, Nagpur railway station is one of them. Work is to be sourced out to the Public-Private Partnerships and the Central Railway has identified priority areas like security, safety and cleanliness for the station.[4]

The close-situated Ajni is planned to be developed as a terminus and is also under consideration with a vision of diverting the traffic from the Nagpur railway station in the long run. A proposal to develop Ajni as a coaching complex is also under way.[4][5]

Facilities

The waiting area for passengers on platform No. 1 covers a large area. The main complex has waiting and retiring rooms for passengers awaiting connecting trains. It also has 'Comesum', the IRCTC authorized multicuisine food plaza in the main building, having seating capacity of 150 people.

The Retiring Rooms are available at the rent rates of 250 rupees, for those with air conditioning and 200 rupees without.

Following are the trains which operate from the Nagpur Railway Station.[6] More passing trains from Nagpur, are available for Bhopal Junction via. Itarsi Junction, Gwalior, Jabalpur Junction via. Balaghat Junction, New Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Indore Junction BG, Jaipur, Lucknow, Agra, Varanasi, Rajkot, Surat and almost, all the destinations throughout the India.
