The Nine Gates Infantry Commander (Chinese: 步軍統領、九門提督) was a military official of the Qing dynasty in charge of safeguarding and monitoring traffic, as well as the opening times of the nine gates of Peking City, namely Zhengyangmen, Chongwenmen, Andingmen, Fuchengmen, Xizhimen, Dongzhimen, Xuangwumen, Dehshengmen, and Zhaoyangmen. His judicial responsibilities included night patrol, fire fighting, security checks of civilians, the apprehension and arrest of criminals, and prison keeping. He was also responsible for the military protection of the Forbidden City. Throughout the history of the Qing dynasty, the position was always held by Manchu ministers.[1][2]
Boxer Rebellion
During the Boxer Rebellion, Chongli was the Nine Gates Infantry Commander until June 21, when Prince Zhuang (Zhaixun) replaced him.
