I INTRODUCTION FOR THE TRAINER Before the safe motherhood needs assessment field work can begin, it is critical that the teams of surveyors are well prepared for their tasks. The success of the needs assessment depends on the ability of the surveyors to collect valid and reliable data - without good data, the entire needs assessment will be compromised. The safe motherhood needs assessment coordinator is responsible for training surveyors. The specific objectives of this training are to prepare surveyors to: + perform al1 survey tasks; + become familiar with the survey forms; + use forms as intended to survey health facilities; + reach agreement and consistency (inter-surveyor reliability) behveen surveyors in following the survey procedures and completing the survey forms; + plan and manage the flow of survey activities at a health facility so that al1 tasks can be completed during the visit; and + identify solutions to potential problems in conducting the survey. This part of the safe motherhood needs assessment manual outlines a five-day training workshop that is intended to achieve these objectives. This workshop is consistent with the guidelines and mode1 survey forms provided with the safe motherhood needs assessment (Parts 1 and II). Before these training materials are used, however, they must be reviewed and adapted to address the specific situation in which they are applied. Specifically: O Any adaptations to the survey forms (additions, deletions) must be reflected in the training sessions. Depending on which survey forms were selected to be used in the assessment, it is possible that entire sections of the training will be removed. O The proposed exercises should be reviewed in light of local needs and practices.
