1. Introduction Several meetings have in the past few years suggested various types of norms for the description and assessment of obesity (1-4). However, it has been suggested that it would be useful to have a set of simple recommendations and norms for the classification of obesity emanating from WHO, so as to be able to describe populations anthropometrically with greater precision than has been done to date. In particular, it would be useful to have recommendations for more standardized presentations to allow intercountry and intracountry comparison. Until now, very few international comparisons have been possible, mainly because of the way the data has been analysed and presented (see Annex 1). The intention of this meeting was therefore to address this problem and to produce recommended methods and standards for the measurement of populations, and for the analysis and presentation of data. It was realized that measuring children posed several problems, which probably warrant a specific meeting. This aspect was therefore not discussed at the present meeting, which dealt only with the measurement of adult populations.
