Excerpt
In Switzerland, one person in two dies of cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular conditions are also the most frequent reason for hospital admission. Furthermore, they give rise to high costs: roughly 15 % of the direct costs of the health sector can be attributed to them. Coronary disease is particularly important because of the loss of active life that it represents for families, the community and the economy; infarction affects younger individuals on average than the other major cardiovascular ailments such as cerebrovascular accidents (1,2). It has been demonstrated that the three major risk factors for cardiovascular disease are smoking, high blood pressure and excess lipids in the blood. Furthermore, it is now well known that the overall risk in the presence of two or three of these factors is greater than the sum of the risks for each occurring separately (see Fig. 1) (3).
