For many years it had been observed in Somalia that whenever the local larvivorous fish previously known as Tilapia (now identified as Oreochromis spilurus spilurus) existed in substantial numbers, no mosquito larvae were detected in the same waters. The potential use of this fish for malaria control work was realized and a few preliminary stud~es on its voracity were quite impressive.
