Excerpt
Dear Mr. Chairman: The FTC should be commended for deciding to establish an Advisory Committee on Online Access and Security. I believe that there are profound public concerns about privacy on the Internet, and that unless these concerns are addressed, they threaten to affect the growth of commerce on this medium. This in turn has ramifications for our economy as a whole. I would urge consideration by the Commission of Peter J. Reid for membership on this panel. Mr. Reid is Vice President of NCR Corporation, a company headquartered in my district, and he serves as Director of NCR's Privacy Center of Expertise. He is an expert on incorporating personal data protection capabilities in business services. Because NCR has been the leading manufacturer of financial verification equipment for credit card transactions, the company's interest in privacy and security matters predates the development of the Internet.
