DISTRIBUTION Consideration of Aedes aegypti in the Mediterranean area is more an historical task than a contemporary scientific one. At one time, this species was present nearly everywhere along the Mediterranean shores. However, it was studied mainl5- in and around the large seaports, in comexion with epidemics of dengue fever and, later on, in the immediate vicinity of airports, pursuant to the regulations of the international quarantine on yelIo\~ fever. It may be assumed that A. negypti populations have been rather dense in the past, particularly in Portugal, Spain, Greece and the North African countries, if one refers to the high prevalence of dengue fever there in the early 1890s. Kumnl (1931) and, more recently, Foote & Cook (1959) have listed some places where A. negypti has been recorded, as follows: Corsica, Crete, Cyprus, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Portugal, Sardinia, Spain, Syria, Turkey and Yugoslavia in Europe and the Middle East, and Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia in North Africa.
