Excerpt
Excerpt: There is considerable concern about the increasing incidence of endocrine-related cancers and deteriorating reproductive health in man and wildlife (1?3). It is apparent that a large number of natural and man-made chemicals have the ability to mimic the action of the endogenous steroid hormone 17(Beta)-estradiol by binding to and activating the estrogen receptor (4,5). At any given time, people are exposed to a multitude of such xenoestrogens, yet research has tended to focus predominantly on the activity of single compounds. The need to assess the effects of mixtures of estrogenic agents is widely acknowledged and considered to be an issue of high priority (6). However, the few mixture studies conducted to date with xenoestrogens have suffered from inadequate theoretical and conceptual foundations or could not be reproduced experimentally in other laboratories [for reviews and comments, see (7?9)].
