There are no recent data on energy requirements during pregnancy and lactation, or on the protein requirements for lactation, These are subjects that deserve high priority. There is evidence that undernourished women secrete a smaller volume of milk (Zl), and studies in Guatemala have shown that supplements of energy dunng the second half of pregnancy improve performance during pregnancy and lactatLon (22).
