Excerpt
Poliomyelitis used to be a major public health problem in Singapore during the immediate post-war period (after 1945). In 1958, mass administration of Sabin type-2 attenuated poliovirus vaccine to children was demonstrated to be effective in aborting an epidemic caused by poliovirus 1 (I, 2). The national childhood immunization programme against poliomyelitis was introduced in March 1962. The comprehensive coverage of this programme, in which more than 85% of infants and 95% of primary school entrants were immunized every year, has led to the elimination of paralytic poliomyelitis in the country (3-5).
