Excerpt: General Chmmium was named for the many colors manifested by its compounds. As is seen in Figure 1, potassium dichromate, K2Cr207, is red, potassium chromate, K2Cr04, is yellow, and chromium trichloride, CrCl:), is green. The element (1) is found in the combined fom mainly as the chromite ore, FeCr204, a spinel. Here chromium occupies .octahedral sites and Fe occupies tetrahedral sites. Lower abundant ores are crocoite (PbCrOJ, chrome ochre (C1-20:3)a, nd chromium in trace am0unt.s is found in emerald and ruby. The main deposits are in southern Africa with 96% of the known reserves.
