Excerpt
Excerpt: The Construction Sector is the single largest sector within the Ministry of Industry & Minerals. The sector consists of three broad areas of production; cement, building materials, and glass and ceramic products. This sector is composed of 45 factories that focus on producing essential building materials. The cement industry has the potential to be the most profitable industry in Iraq. The Ministry presently operates 19 cement plants across the country that have a combined design capacity of 17.8 million metric tons per year. Due to the lack of available spare parts, short supply of electricity, as well as general neglect from the prior regime, the present production capacity is 3 million metric-tons per year. The Ministry has taken bold steps in rehabilitating some of the plants and expects to more than double the present production capacity by 2005.
