Excerpt
Leptoapirosis occurs throughout the world in man and animals, both sporadically and in epidemics. The severe forms in man may be fatal and are more commonly and easily recognized than milder forms, especially in tropical countries where prevalent febrile illnesses may be confused clinically with leptospirosis. The forms of leptospirosis reflect the local geographical and climatic conditions, which determine the type and number of reservoir animals and sources of infection. The main human clinical forms occur in exposed occupational groups (farmers, meat workers, veterinarians, sewerage workers), often with a clear seasonal incidence (wet season, flooding, harvest), resulting in illness and loss of productivity. The reservoirs in carrier animals are usually rodents (rats, field mice) or domestic and farm animals (pigs, cattle), which latter may themselves decline in productivity through leptospirosis.
