Excerpt
To help overcoliic iliis situation, the B~lIetiiof tlie Wo~ldH enIlii Or.gnriiirrtior, has introduced a new series of articles. which appear under the general heading of Pro,oress i,r sta~iclardizatiorr. The articles in this scries identify the international organizations that are involved in standardization activities in csery area directly or indirectly related to public healih. The roles of the dilferent organizations and the way in which they are interrelated are described. Finally, each article attempts to list every standard that has been established in its field. To make the series as hclpful as possible, rhe word standard is inierprcred broadly, so as to include all recommendations rnade by international bodies concerning nomendature, test methods, and all othcr areas where standardization is necessary. Where international standards are lacking or felt to he inadequate, attention is drawn to the reconlmendations of national and ~,rofessional societies or standards bodies that are suitable for interim use. The D. a.oe rs therefore serve as bibliogaphical indexes to all iilter~iational and some national standards related to public Ihealtli. Since new standards are established fairly frequently in sonle areas to be covered by the new series, it is planned to publish addenda listing such new standards as they are issued. thus maintaining the value of the papers as indexes ro the material that is available
