Excerpt
Generic drug quality United States of America -The Food and Drug Administration is currently undertaking an intensive review of the quality of approved generic drug products. Within this programme it has recently tested over 400 batches of branded and generic versions of 24 widely-used drugs made by 72 manufacturers. All were chosen because lack of bioequivalency between products was particularly likely to result in adverse reactions or therapeutic failure. In each case, tests were undertaken to establish potency, dissolution rate and content uniformity. Represented within the group were antiinfectives, antidysrhythmics, an anticoagulant, an oral contraceptive and a wide variety of drugs used in the maintenance therapy of chronic diseases including hypertension, asthma, epilepsy, and depression.
