Excerpt
Excerpt: The periodic reports by the Surgeon General of the United States dramatically illustrate the research effort that has been expended to understand the health consequences of cigarette smoking, both to the smoker and to nearby nonsmokers (1-3). There is overwhelming evidence that smoking is, at least in part, responsible for such diverse and life-threatening diseases as emphysema, heart and blood vessel disease, and cancer.
