Excerpt
Excerpt: SUMMARY; Japan's defeat in World War II has created a vacuum of power in the Far East Where the extension of Soviet influence and U.S. strategic interests have been brought into direct conflict. From the point of view of either the U.S. or the U.S.S.R., control of Japan is important to the control fo the Far Eastern area, both because of the islands geographical location and because Japan, while militarily defenseless at present., possesses a large reservoir of trained manpower, which, if mobilized and provided logistic support, could become a potent factor in determining the outcome of any future armed conflict embracing the Far East.
