Excerpt: There are many philosophies which teach that 'actions speak louder than words', but in Zen Taoism it is both the thought or motive, and the action, which are considered important. This view was expressed by Lao Tzu, who in the sixth century before the Christian era, wrote the definitive work of Taoist philosophy, a book of eighty-one very short but expressive chapters, known as the 'Tao Te Ching'. It was Lao Tzu's only written work, and has been translated from the original classical Chinese into most mod ern languages, including over thirty English translations. In chapter thirty-seven of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu tells us,
