Andhra University was established in 1926. Located on the uplands of Visakhapatnam, the campus has the Bay of Bengal on one side and the Kailasagiri hill range on the other. Sir Dr.C.R.Reddy was the founder Vice-Chancellor of the university.

Andhra University College of Engineering (Autonomous), Visakhapatnam, is the campus college of University. It is one of the highly rated colleges of Engineering in the country. At the time of inception in 1955 it was a Department of Engineering with Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering as the main branches.

In 1960, the Department of Engineering was shifted to the present North campus spread over 150 acres (0.61 km2) of land. The Department of Chemical Technology, instituted in 1933, was shifted to the same campus in 1962, adding strength to the Engineering Departments. In 1966, the College of Engineering (Autonomous) became a constituent of the Andhra University.

The College of Engineering (Autonomous) consists of 12 Engineering and four Basic Sciences departments, totalling 16 departments, offering 15 undergraduate Engineering day-time programmes and four undergraduate Engineering part-time programmes; 28 postgraduate Engineering programmes, one MCA and three M.Sc. programmes. All the departments run Ph.D programmes in research.

The college has Centres of Excellence carrying out research in specialized areas. These include:

  • The International Center for Bioinformatics
  • Advanced Center for Nano Technology
  • Center for Biotechnology in the Department of Chemical Engineering
  • Center for Phase Equilibrium Thermodynamics in the Department of Chemical Engineering
  • Center for Energy Systems in the Department of Mechanical Engineering
  • Center for Condition Monitoring and Vibration Diagnostics in the Department of Mechanical Engineering
  • Center for Remote Sensing and Information Systems in the Department of Geo Engineering
  • Centre for Research on Off-Shore Structures in the Department of Civil Engineering

The college is graded along with the Andhra University by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and awarded a rating of A + (85%).

The college is one of the four Lead Institutions selected in the state of Andhra Pradesh for World Bank Aid.

Students are admitted into the undergraduate programmes based on their score in the (EAMCET) [Engineering and medical common entrance test] - a Common Entrance Test conducted by the Government of Andhra Pradesh.

Students are admitted into the Postgraduate programmes based on their GATE scores based on all India ranking (or) their ranking in (PGECET) [Post Graduate Engineering Common Entrance Test] - a test conducted by the Government of Andhra Pradesh.

Students are admitted into the 5 year integrated dual degree [(B.E.+M.E. / B.TECH.+M.TECH.)and (B.E.+M.B.A. / B.TECH.+M.B.A.)] programmes based on their ranking in the (AUEET) [Andhra University Engineering Entrance Test] - a test conducted by Andhra University.

Engineering Curriculum Development

The college follows a four-year duration (one year + six semesters) with external mode of examination for B.E/B.Tech/B.Arch/B.Pharm programmes and a four semester course for the M.E/M.Tech programmes. It is also having 5 yr integrated courses (B.Tech + M.Tech).

The students are admitted into the undergraduate programmes based on their score in the EAMCET - a Common Entrance Test conducted by the Government of Andhra Pradesh and into the postgraduate programmes based on their GATE scores based on all India ranking or their ranking in PGECET which was conducted by the Andhra Pradesh State Government for admissions into Technical Post Graduate programs. Majority of the AU Engineering College faculty possess higher qualifications than the mandatory minimum prescribed by the AICTE/UGC.

The departments of the college conduct Technical Paper Contests for the students, with participation from students all over the country.

Research and Consultancy The faculty of the college is involved in research and are running projects and research schemes that are granted by National level funding agencies like UGC, AICTE, CSIR, DST, DOD, DAE, NSTL and DOT etc. The expertise and competence of the faculty has motivated the College of Engineering to set up a number of Centers of Excellence being granted/approved by UGC and AICTE.
