Progress Expansion When EPI was started in 1979, it covered only Dhaka City, with two static centres. Primary centres were gradually opened in district towns and sub-divisional towns throughout the country followed by Upazilla (formerly Thana) Health Centres where electricity was available. Sub-centres (without vaccine storage) served from the primary centres were gradually opened in all districts. The major period of expansion was from 1981 as shown in Table 1.
