INTRODUCTION Untreated, congenital hypothyroidism has devastating effects on the growth and development of infants. A deficiency in circulating thyroxine is the biochemical defect that causes this disorder. The deficiency in thyroid hormone can be the result of no thyroid gland, incomplete gland development, or inability to synthesize thyroxine because of iodine deficiency. The early detection and treatment of congenital hypothyroidism is essential to prevention of severe irreversible mental retardation and physical deformities. Some features of untreated hypothyroidism are similar to those of cretinism which exists in endemic goiter regions of the world. The diagnosis and treatment of congenital hypothyroidism must happen before three months of age for therapeutic effectiveness. Early clinical diagnosis is difficult, and before newborn screening, most cases of infant hypothyroidism were not detected before three months of age 1 .
