In a recent WHO technical document, Muir (1975) c a l l s a t t e n t i o n to the p r a c t i c a l need to measure selection pressures acting on i n s e c t i c i d e r e s i s t a n c e genes in malaria vectors. As he points out, the estimated selection coefficient allows predictions of future changes in the frequency of the resistance genes to be made, and may a i d i n planning control programmes, To these ends even rough estimates could be valuable. The purpose of t h i s note is to point out possible sources of inaccuracy which can be minimized.
