Excerpt
The symposium was opened by the mayor of Rimini and by Dr. Walter Pasini, Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Tourist Health and Tourist Medicine. Mr. Eric Giroult, Scientist, Division of Operational Support in Environmental Health of the World Health Organization (WHO), acted as chairman and welcomed the participants on behalf of Dr. Hiroshi Nakajima, Director-General of WHO. Four of the six WHO Regions were represented among the participants at this symposium. Dr. Robin Philipp, Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Environmental Health Promotion and Ecology, located at the University of Briscol in England, acted as rapporteur. After having organized the International Meeting on Prevention and Control of Infections in Tourists in the MediterraneanAreaM, Rimini, 8 - 11 February 1988, the Second International Conference on Tourist Health, Rimini, 15 - 18 March 1989, and the Third International Conference on Tourist Health, Venice, 14 - 17 November 1990, the WHO Collaborating Centre for Tourist Healch and Tourist Medicine decided to dedicate the Fourth International Symposium to Sea Tourism and Health. The reason for this choice was the fact that millions of people choose to spend their holidays at the seaside. The sea is a main economic resource of many countries and it i s the duty of health authorities, family doctors, travel clinic doctors and doctors in receiving countries to take care of the health of these tourists.
