In the early attack phase the response to attack measures is assessed from the results of serial parasite surveys which, in the later stages will require, in order to be significant, 27 000 and 40 000 blood films per million people in the last two surveys, when the parasite rate reaches the lower limit of 2%. The same people are probably not examined on these two occasions but even if 65 000 people were examined in those twelve months, this represents 6.5% of the population - the process is still a sampling method where the criterla for selection are ecological features, geographical distribution, and perhaps age, and are not based on enhanced possibility of finding cases. As the parasite rate falls under continued effective attack measures the results of sample surveys lose a great part of their significance and become an inefficient method of detecting all parasitaemias. Also, blood film examination of the total population at frequent intervals is not practical.
