Excerpt
A number of laboratory methods have been used in the diagnosis of smallpox infections; these are summarized by Dumhell (1968) and Downie & Kempe (1969). Since 1966, rhe \'esicular Disease Laboratory of the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Atlanta, Ga., USA. has made use of most of these methods, both in its capacity as the reference laboratory for CDC's Smallpox Erad~cation Program conducted in 20 West African countries and as a WHO Reglotla1 Reference Laboratom for Smallpox. The diagnostic methods now used in this laboratory have been chosen because of rheir proven reliability and the short time required for performance. This report presents results that denionstrate the sensitivity of our selected methods. The results also show that the methods werc not always adequate when unusual events occurred, and emphasize the need for development of even more precise and effective techniques.
