Excerpt: The Caribbean has one of the most severe HIV/AIDS epidemics outside sub-Saharan Africa. In the Bahamas, an estimated 4 percent of adults were living with HIV/AIDS at the end of 1999, the second highest rate in the region after Haiti. Although no recent data are available, by the early 1990s high levels of HIV prevalence were found among STD clinic patients as well as in pregnant women.
