Excerpt: HIGHLIGHTS x The number of households in the United States is projected to increase during the next 15 years, reaching 103 million by the turn of the century and almost 115 million by 2010. However, the rate of household growth during this period may be slower than it has been during the past few decades due to slower population growth and, specifically, smaller population cohorts entering the primary ages of household formation. x The number of family households is projected to increase by 15 percent (from 68 million in 1995 to 78 million in 2010), adding more than half of the growth in total households. As a proportion of all households, family households would decrease slightly from 70 to 68 percent.
