A g r e a t v a r i e t y of non-human primates (gibbons, monkeys, langurs or leaf-monkeys, orangutans) i s present i n South-East Asia, p a r t i c u l a r l y Malaysia and Indonesia. Of t h e s e , the most common a r e the macaques spp,) and the leaf-monkeys ( P r e s b y t i s spp.). In Malaysia and Indonesia, some members of these genera a r e important r e s e r v o i r s of zoonotic f i l a r i a s i s (Laing, 1961; Lim & Mak, 1979; Mak e t a l . , 1982; Lim & Sudomo, 1983). Recent s t u d i e s show t h a t they play a s i g n i f i c a n t r o l e i n the epidemiology of human f i l a r i a s i s i n endemic areas. This paper p r e s e n t s r e c e n t f i n d i n g s , discusses some aspects of possible control measures of the r e s e r v o i r h o s t s and gives recommendations f o r f u t u r e research.
