Description
Although essentially set in Australia, the author, Tony Kelly also describes his travels in Europe and Canada which included a journey by horseback in the Rocky Mountains in the late 1950s. The book provides a social history of farming life in South Australia during the 1940s and 50s and captures the excitement of agricultural development in Western Australia during the 1960s. A time when many people headed west from established family farms to make their own mark with the promise of cheap land and opportunity.

Summary
A delightful story of a childhood spent growing up with horses,on a farm in the Lower North of South Australia during the war years. After an undistinguished but interesting period at a boarding school in Adelaide, the author hitch-hiked around the world for two years living on his wits, before swallowing the anchor, and settling down to earning a living on the farm. Later on, he and his new bride were involved in the large scale migration of Eastern States farmers, to the cheap new land in Western Australia. The story of how their farm was developed and "a living was wrung from the reluctant soil", is well told by an author with a wickedly dry sense of humour.

Excerpt
It was late January 1962 when we set out on our great pilgrimage to the west. At this time there were a lot of other farmers doing the same thing, loading up their gear and coming across. We were just one of many who were part of this exodus. As a matter of interest, there was one farmer from South Australia who settled at Experance and is on record as having driven his tractor across, towing a small road train of vehicles behind him. But then he turned around and drove his tractor back again, to pick up a second load. Incredible!
