Leprosy is one of the diseases that has plagued humanity since time immemorial. It was especially feared for its ability to deform and disfigure its victims, who were unfairly shunned and ostracized because of ignorance about how the disease was caused and transmitted It was a wasting rather than a killing disease. And there was no known cure. Today we can see, not far over the horizon, the dawn of an era when leprosy will have gone the way of smallpox and will no longer exist as a disease. Still closer at hand is the elimination of leprosy as a public health problem. That goal of elimination has been made possible by the year 2000, thanks to the deployment of multidrug therapy (MDT), the most promising weapon against the disease so far discovered. This booklet tells the success story of the fight against leprosy and shows that - despite the bright prospects for bringing about elimination - there is no room for complacency. To achieve our goal will call for all available resources to be found and every human effort to be made by health authorities, dedicated NGOs and the World Health Organization to bring MDT to all infected individuals in every leprosy endemic area of the world. Above all, it will require the wholehearted political will of governments in countries both rich and poor to bring the campaign to a triumphant conclusion.
